Reviews
By taking the antibiotic, it would surround the bacterias thus preventing further spread if the infections to other body parts.
Jim Keld
General Practioner
Amoxicillin worked usually by the second dose. My daughter was up and around and feeling better immediatley it seemed.
It had no side effects that she ever had. She could either take it on a full tomach or empty one.
Mary Jane
Tallinn University of Technology
The benefits of amoxicillin were that it did help clear the infection, it seemed to help my acne, also.
I noticed it working within about four days. I only had to take it for a week.
It did not taste bad. It did not make me foggy headed.
Tom Welling
Self Employed
Amoxicillin treats infections like:
- Infection of the ear, nose and throat (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Infections of the skin and skin structure
- Infections of the genitourinary tract
- Infections of the lower respiratory tract
- Gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated ( ano-genital and urethral infections) in male and females
Amox acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall and stopping the growth of bacteria. Amox is usually a drug of choice within the class because it is better absorbed, following oral administration, than othe beta-lactam antibiotics
Amox is also used before some surgery or dental work to prevent infections. It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. Pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers.
What is the shelf life of the pills?
The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
Common side effects caused by taking Amoxicillin ?
Amox may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly. An allergic reaction to Amoxicillin is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing. Use of Amoxicillin for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral or vaginal yeast infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions for taking amoxicillin?
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of blood disorders, kidney problems, or allergies to penicillin or other antibiotics. Before using Amoxicillin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Amoxicillin passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
- Be sure to tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicine.
- It is very important to tell the doctor the names of ALL medicines that you are currently taking—even pills bought at the store such as vitamins and antacids.
- Tell your doctor if you have asthma, which is a breathing problem, or any other illnesses.
- Birth control pills may not work as well when taking this medication. Be sure to use condoms or another form of birth control until you have finished the entire course of treatment.
- Amoxicillin is safe to take when you are pregnant but be sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant.
- In women, amoxicillin can cause vaginal itching and discharge commonly known as a yeast infection. Tell your doctor if this happens.
Overdose?
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Missed a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Where to storage amoxicillin?
Keep at room temperature between 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom.
Taking Amoxil regularly
Amoxil is usually taken regularly, and you will need to follow all the recommendations of your health care provider, even if they are slightly different from the ones on the label of your medicine. It’s important to avoid missing doses and take the entire amount of generic Amoxil prescribed, as otherwise a relapse of infection is possible. If you happened to miss a dose, take it as soon as possible unless you will need to take another one soon. In that case just skip the dose you missed. Make sure you avoid combining generic Amoxil with birth control pills (as it can affect the efficiency of your contraception), as well as methotrexate, sulfa drugs, probenecid, tetracycline antibiotics or any other antibiotics.
How to take amoxicillin?
ADULTS: Take one pill three times a day.
CHILDREN: A child’s dose depends on body weight. Give the medicine to your child as directed by the doctor.
Specifics
AMOXIL is indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible (ONLY β-lactamase–negative) strains of the designated microorganisms in the conditions listed below:
- Infections of the ear, nose, and throat – due to Streptococcus spp. (α- and β-hemolytic strains only), S. pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., or H. influenzae.
- Infections of the genitourinary tract – due to E. coli, P. mirabilis, or E. faecalis.
- Dual Therapy: AMOXIL/lansoprazole
AMOXIL, in combination with lansoprazole delayed-release capsules as dual therapy, is indicated for the treatment of patients with H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease (active or 1-year history of a duodenal ulcer) who are either allergic or intolerant to clarithromycin or in whom resistance to clarithromycin is known or suspected.
- Infections of the skin and skin structure – due to Streptococcus spp. (α- and β-hemolytic strains only), Staphylococcus spp., or E. coli.
- Infections of the lower respiratory tract – due to Streptococcus spp. (α- and β-hemolytic strains only), S. pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., or H. influenzae.
- Gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated (ano-genital and urethral infections) – due to N. gonorrhoeae (males and females).
H. pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence
- Triple Therapy: AMOXIL/clarithromycin/lansoprazole
AMOXIL, in combination with clarithromycin plus lansoprazole as triple therapy, is indicated for the treatment of patients with H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease (active or 1-year history of a duodenal ulcer) to eradicate H. pylori. Eradication of H. pylori has been shown to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence. (See CLINICAL STUDIES and DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION.)
To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of AMOXIL and other antibacterial drugs, AMOXIL should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
Indicated surgical procedures should be performed.
